John Lynch started a ferry service across the James River in 1757 and in 1786, the Virginia General Assembly granted Lynch a charter for a town, which encompassed the 45 acres of land that he owned. WebAlthough the name "Diamond Hill" appeared in a newspaper advertisement as early as 1825, the origin of the name has not been definitively established. It is quite likely, however, that the area derives its name from Diamond Hill plantation which was established in the late 1700’s or early 1800’s by Edward Lynch, brother of Lynchburg’s founder, John Lynch.
