How do heating elements work
WebJun 8, 2024 · The basic operation of a two thermostat system (upper and lower) on an electric water heater of 240 volt supply is as follows: Only one element will come on at any one time. The lower thermostat switch will close and heat up the bottom portion of the tank until the water is heated to the setting of that thermostat. A heating element converts electrical energy into heat through the process of Joule heating. Electric current through the element encounters resistance, resulting in heating of the element. Unlike the Peltier effect, this process is independent of the direction of current.
